4.09 mile run in 80 degree weather. First run in a looong time. My feet are so weak, two toes in my left foot cramped up as soon as I slowed to a walk. Felt great though to get out and just run.

I thought Keith Wittenstein would enjoy this. Kind of right up his alley. I occasionally use this link as a one-line IM response.

Polar USA, to my surprise, is not comprised of dirty rotten bastards. My heart rate monitor watch, shown above, recently died, but because it’s out of warranty, I wasn’t expecting any kindness from the manufacturer. Well, I was wrong. I called up the service center - which happens to be located here in New York - explained my situation, and bam: FREE WATCH REPLACEMENT. Thank you Polar.
Note to reader:
I have a proven track record of maneuvering the tricky labyrinth of customer service, automated answering systems, and city hall - without begging, yelling, or demanding to speak with “the manager”. Below is a list of notable accomplishments - not because of the money at stake, but because of the emotional satisfaction of having won.
- 2010: Got Apple to replace my 3.5 year old macbook pro with a brand new macbook pro at no charge, because I convinced them that I had, what they refer to in Switzerland as, a “monday model” (American translation: a lemon). It really was, by the way.
- 2010: Convinced Bed Bath and Beyond to replace a 3 year old $600 Dyson vacuum cleaner that smelled like dog shit. Specifically, because it smelled like dog shit, and that just didn’t seem reasonable. I also mentioned repeatedly that this problem occurred after using the vacuum cleaner on dog shit.
- 2009: Refuted 2 consecutively issued parking tickets in Park Slope by mail, and won.
- 2008: Was unfairly charged a processing fee by my former gym because of a billing hiccup caused by a change in a credit card number. Convinced American Express to pay this fee.
- 2006: Went to small claims court because I was sued by a woman who gave me a quote on wedding catering. Won handily via arbitration, and made the arbitrating attorney crack up by pointing out the several spelling errors on the part of the complainant.
Lights out

Had 4 beers after jiu jitsu, half a chicken breast, and some string beans. Feeling buzzed.
Non Paleo Poop Fiesta
A while back, I posted a question to the google group about poop. I noticed that while on Paleo, my pooping frequency had gone down to a miniscule daily average of 2 times - normally, I go between 3 and 5 times a day.
Here’s what I’ve noticed since stopping paleo:
On sunday and monday, I ate some forbidden food. Specifically:
- Sunday: pizza, rice, pasta, pretzels, chips (I was trapped at a relative’s house)
- Monday: 1/8 cup oatmeal, 3/4 cup white rice, 1/2 cup green lentils
On tuesday morning, I awoke feeling bloated, and have - as of 9:33 am - pooped 3 times. I fully expect to go another 2 times today. Sadly, this doesn’t make me happy. Pooping 5 times a day just isn’t as satisfying as it once was.
Day 4 Non Paleo
Morning weight: 158.4 lbs
Woke up at 6:46, went back to sleep. Rose from bed at 7:15. Ate breakfast feeling a bit bloated - rice and beans from last night’s dinner the likely culprit. I’m still easing into the grains, but I feel like my gi tract is sending a warning shot across the bow. Today, there will be no rice - just dairy.
Breakfast: 7:45 am

- 2 egg omelette with provolone and mushroom
- Sauteed broccolini
- 3oz nonfat fage yogurt with banana, raspberries, 1/2 tbsp honey, and sprinkling of hemp granola
3 mile tempo run: 9:55 am
First real run in a very long time. Was expecting the pace to have dropped more than it did, but 7:40 per mile is respectable.
- Avg Heart rate: Unsure. Piece of shit polar watch is now broken. The shitheads who designed that crap should return their engineering degrees at once.
- Total time: 23:00
Snack: 10:45 am
- 20 raw almonds
- Olives
- Banana
